Hack for Social Cause is a groundbreaking initiative under VBYLD 2026, designed to empower youth aged 18–29 to build scalable, technology-driven solutions for Social good. Choose from eight indicative transformative themes aligned with India’s development priorities. Participants are encouraged to contextualize these themes to address State-specific or local challenges. They may also propose solutions beyond these themes, provided they align with any of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and contribute to building a Viksit Bharat

Develop smart agriculture solutions, rural employment platforms, and tools empowering women entrepreneurs. How to Participate

Your journey to creating meaningful impact starts here. Follow these steps to register, prepare your solution, and advance through each stage of the competition.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: Open only to Indian nationals
  • Age: Students aged 18-29 years as of September 1, 2025
  • Institution: Currently enrolled in an AISHE-registered Indian educational institution (college, university, or polytechnic)
  • Registration: All team members must register individually on the MY Bharat portal. Individual registration is a prerequisite for team registration.
  • Team Composition: Form a team of up to three students from the same institution.
  • Team Lead: One member must be designated as the Team Lead, responsible for submitting the entry and all documents.
  • Diversity:Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged, with at least one female member and one participant from a non-technology background, preferably social sciences.

What You Need to Submit

Prepare the following materials for your submission:

  • Problem Statement: State-specific problem statement, target beneficiary identification, current challenges and gaps (aligned with one of the eight program themes)
  • Solution Description: Detailed explanation of your innovative approach, technology stack and architecture, key features and functionality, expected social/economic outcomes, measurable impact metrics (KPIs), scalability across regions/languages, and sustainability model
  • Working Prototype: Link to your code repository (GitHub/GitLab) - complete source code (open-source), detailed README with setup instructions, architecture documentation, sample data/test cases, and license information
  • Demo Video: Short video (3–5 minutes, MP4/MOV, minimum 720p) demonstrating your team, problem with real-world context, prototype walkthrough, user interaction, and impact visualization
  • Team Details: Team member roles and expertise, implementation roadmap, and resource requirements

Step-by-Step Participation Process

A Four-stage competition that takes you from local to national recognition:

  • 1Individual Registration (Prerequisite)

    Register on MY Bharat Portal (individual). All team members must register individually on the MY Bharat Portal.

  • 2Form Your Team & Register - Participate in the track "Hack for Social Cause"

    Participate in the track "Hack for Social Cause" - Register your team(up to 3 students), this can be completed by the Lead member of the team. This step completes the team registration process.Work closely with your LIC for guidance.

  • 3Internal Hackathon (Stage I)

    Participate in your in¬¬stitution’s internal hackathon and present your solution to the institutional jury. The institution will nominate one team and issue a bonafide letter to the selected team. The winning team must upload this letter on the My Bharat Portal. The LIC or Head of the Institution will then forward the letter to the SNIC (State Nodal Institution Coordinator).

  • 4State Hackathon (Stage II)

    If nominated, advance to the state-level hackathon. Receive mentoring from assigned experts (6–8 per state), refine your solution, and present to the state jury. Top 3 teams per state move forward.

  • 5IIT Bombay Screening (Stage III)

    One finalist per state/UT is selected for the National Showcase based on technical merit and impact potential.

  • 6National Showcase (Stage IV)

    Present your solution at the National Showcase in New Delhi during VBYLD 2026. Set up exhibition stalls, deliver 3-minute pitches to the national jury, and compete for top honors.

IIT Bombay Guidance

  • Resources and learning materials
  • Offline mentorship support at the venue(Delhi)

Intellectual Property (IP) Rights

Throughout your journey, you'll receive support from experienced professionals and domain experts:

Your innovation is valuable. IP rights are structured to ensure:

  • Intellectual Property Protection:
    All intellectual property rights in submitted solutions remain with the participant teams. Participation does not transfer ownership to MoYAS or IIT Bombay.
  • Fair Use for Social Impact:
    MoYAS and IIT Bombay may display, publish, or promote entries in exhibitions, online platforms, and educational or promotional materials, with due credit. All submitted code must be open-source under suitable licenses (MIT, Apache 2.0, GPL, etc.).
  • Support for Further Development:
    Participants grant organizers a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use submitted materials for promotion, education, and communication related to HSC and VBYLD.

1. What is Hack for a Social Cause, who is organizing this hackathon, and what are the objectives?

Hack for a Social Cause (HSC) is a national technology innovation challenge under the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (VBYLD) 2026. It is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS) through the Department of Youth Affairs, with IIT Bombay (GISE Hub & Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management) serving as the Knowledge Partner.

The hackathon aims to mobilize India's youth (aged 18-29) to develop innovative, technology-enabled solutions for real-world social challenges across eight thematic areas: Rural Development & Livelihoods, Education & Skill Development, Healthcare & Wellbeing, Governance & Civic Technology, Environment & Sustainability, Digital Inclusion, AI, GIS & Emerging Technologies, and Disaster Mitigation & Resilience. 2. How can I register for HSC?

Registration is a two-step process. First, all team members must register individually on the MY Bharat Portal. The Team Lead will register the team on the MY Bharat Portal under the "Hack for Social Cause" track. Then, participate in your institution's internal hackathon.

3. Am I eligible to participate?

You are eligible if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Indian citizen
  • Aged between 18 and 29 years as of September 1, 2025
  • Currently enrolled in an AISHE-registered college, university, or polytechnic in India
  • Part of a team of up to 3 students from the same institution
  • All team members registered individually on the MY Bharat Portal
  • One member to be designated as Team Lead. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged, preferably with at least one female member and one participant from a non-technology background (social sciences preferred).

4. What are the required elements of my submission?

Your complete submission package must include:

  1. Proposal/Presentation Deck (6-7 slides in hackathon submission format provided by IIT Bombay)
  2. Demonstration Video (3-5 minutes, MP4/MOV, minimum 720p)
  3. Prototype/Code Repository (Public GitHub/GitLab link with complete source code, README, architecture documentation, sample data, and license information - must be open-source)

Additionally, your institution will prepare:

  • Bonafide Certificate from Head of Institution (with Team ID, Team Name, Problem Statement, Lead Member, and other member details)
  • All documents must follow the naming convention: <State>_<InstitutionName>_<TeamName>_<Document Name>.pdf

5. Do I have to pay any fees?

No. Participation in Hack for a Social Cause is completely free of cost at all stages, from institution-level competition through the national showcase.

6. Do I need to submit a working prototype?

Yes. You must have a functional prototype or proof of concept that can be demonstrated. The prototype doesn't need to be production-ready, but it must show core functionality with working features. Your demonstration video (3-5 minutes) and code repository should clearly demonstrate user interaction and how the solution works. The code must be publicly accessible and open-source.

7. Can an interdisciplinary team (e.g., Technology, Social Sciences, Business) participate, and what is the maximum team size?

Yes, Interdisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged. Teams should include diverse skill sets, such as technical development, domain knowledge, design thinking, and social research. The maximum team size is 3 students, all from the same institution. Teams are encouraged to have at least one female member and one participant from a non-technical background, preferably in the social sciences.

8. Can I change my submission after it has been uploaded?

No. Once the Team Lead submits the entry via MY Bharat Portal and the institution's LIC verifies it, no changes can be made. Ensure that all materials—presentation deck, demo video, code repository, and supporting documents—are complete and accurate before final submission by November 30, 2025.

9. Can one team submit multiple entries, or can one person be part of multiple teams?

No. Each student can only be part of one team. Each institution can nominate only one team to advance to the state-level competition, though multiple teams may participate in your institution's internal hackathon. The winning team from the institution-level competition will represent your institution at the state level.
